Day In The Life Of An RVP
Kaitie Puente: So before anything, thank you very much for taking the time out of your business schedule and meeting with me today. Today we would like to give the CBS team a quick glimpse into your daily work life as an RVP at Continental Battery Systems.
Mike Shaw: Okay.
Kaitie Puente: I know you have a very busy schedule. Let's go ahead and get started. Can you please share your name and how long you've been with CBS?
Mike Shaw: My name is Mike Shaw, I am the Regional Vice President for the South Region, Region number four and I've been with Continental Batteries, what will be 22 years in September?
Kaitie Puente: Wow, that’s quite a long time! Do you mind letting us know what exactly you started up doing with the company?
Mike Shaw: So, actually I came to the company as part of a small battery company in Houston called Daniel Batteries. Continental bought that company and I was at that point, the warehouse manager of the Continental Houston location.
Kaitie Puente: Nice. Okay.
Mike Shaw: Right.
Kaitie Puente: Describe your responsibilities and the impact of your role on the organization.
Mike Shaw: So, I have to make sure the train stays on the track. Pretty much. You don't have to be a mentor and a teacher and I serve as support to all my branches. I oversee the profitability of branches by managing a bunch of different things like open orders to make sure we're getting our customers batteries when they need them. We're the industry leader when it comes to service our customer service and it's my responsibility to make sure that my branches have everything that they need. In order to live up to that expectation.
Kaitie Puente: Now tell me, what are some skill sets that are required in your daily work?
Mike Shaw: I have to have people skills for sure, have to be able to communicate with customers with fellow employees, and also have to be a very good listener. Have to be a good planner. With good organizational skills and I have to have some computer skills as well, working daily with spreadsheets and branch analysis. I work with Tableau daily, just to make sure that, the branches are headed towards where they need to be.
Kaitie Puente: Okay, and walk me through a typical day role. What kind of communications are you sending or receiving? Do you attend various meetings throughout the day? What type of decisions are you making for the company?
Mike Shaw: So, no, two days are really the same in any way. Usually going with the plan of attack on how you're gonna proceed in a day. And before, you know it's two o'clock and you've been on the phone all day and dealing with emails, there's a ton of email interaction. There are quite a few meetings. There are quite a few one-on-one phone calls just Any form of communication that you can think of we pretty much use and have to utilize that daily.
Kaitie Puente: Okay, sounds like your days never consist of the same thing. You keep yourself. Pretty busy! Last but not least, what do you enjoy the most about being an RVP at CBS?
Mike Shaw: This is probably the easiest question by far, the people that I have to deal with. We have a great group of people, I've met a ton of wonderful people in my almost 22 years and, what with the merger with BSI There's an opportunity to meet a lot of new faces. I'm constantly meeting new people. We have a great group of people that all have one goal in mind and that's simply to be the best in our industry.
Kaitie Puente: Sounds like, it's a pretty nice role from the sounds but there's never a dull moment in the day of an RVP at CBS. Mike, thank you again for your time today, and thank you for everything that you do to keep our company powered.
Mike Shaw: Thank you very much.
